Add some stripes for quick summer spruce up

Img32m What works as a summer staple for your wardrobe can give your home a crisp and trendy lift, too. Just a few things to remember when decorating with stripes:

• Use a light touch—a couple of striped cushions on a sofa, or a striped area rug to freshen a bedroom, or even a fresh new welcome mat at the door will do the trick. RayaBowl5inS9

• Pick up colors from fabrics, drapes, or other furnishings already in the room.

 • And think beyond pillows and rugs—stripes look positively arty on a vase—with or without flowers, and they can bring a touch of whimsy to a kitchen on a salad bowl, napkins, glassware, or even paper plates.

Shown: Classic outdoor pillows, $29 each, from Pottery Barn; Raya bowl, $5.95, from Crate and Barrel.
