OK, everyone knows you can’t go wrong with a classic pair of spectator pumps. But who knew that two-toned specs were a spring wardrobe staple back in 1938?
As I was sifting through 73 years worth of archival photos from Consumer Reports (which made its debut in 1936), I came across the cute pair, shown at left, and chose them as the subject of our “Back in the day” column for the July issue, currently on newsstands.
As the layout with the old-timey photo circulated around the office, one of our staffers happened to be wearing a pair of new pumps (shown, below at right) that were practically dead ringers for the vintage pair.
One big diff: They cost about 12 times as much! Too bad we can’t turn the clock back on those prices.
