Tips on buying puppy supplies

Lola1 After 16 amazing and loving years, my family and I made the difficult decision to put our Bichon Frise, Snowy, to sleep. We love dogs, and our house felt so quiet and empty without the pitter-patter of little paws, so after a few months, we welcomed our newest four-legged friend, Lola, a Yorkshire terrier.

Now, the last time I shopped for a complete set of puppy supplies was nearly 17 years ago. Needless to say, I’m a bit rusty on where to find the best deals. There’s so much to buy! A short leash and a long leash, collar, harness, cage, pet bed, travel carrier, sweater, toys, etc.

Two things I learned: One, it really pays to shop around and two, take a shopping list! It’s very easy to get caught up in all the cute puppy toys, and before you know it, you’re spending a small fortune.

My mom and I went to our local pet store to start, where I signed up for their free membership card and saved a few dollars. But we decided to take a ride over to Target and check out their pet supplies.

The selection wasn’t huge at the store that I visited, but we saved a decent amount of money—the 16-foot leash at Target was identical to the one at the pet store, but it was half the price. The shorter leash and the collar were equally cute, but also half price compared to the pet store.

Here’s a tip for those of you with smaller dogs: We found a baby gate at Target for a fraction of the cost of a pet gate (our pup will only be 5 pounds, so a baby gate is perfect for us!).

You can also shop online if you know exactly what you want (like the size of the collar, bedding, and crate you need, for instance), and if you search for a promotion code you can save even more. To find a promo code for your store, Google the name of the site and type “coupon code” or “promo code.” Or go right to RetailMeNot.com.

Now, if only I could find the magic tool to buy to help us housetrain Lola …

Where do you buy your pet supplies? I’m looking for a cute little dog carrier to carry Lola in—please let me know if you have any recommendations!
