"Shopping" at online swap sites

By Sue Perry on June 22, 2009 12:01:00 am

Need a coffeepot or maybe a new shade of nail polish? How about that new Katy Perry CD or even a vacation home in France? I found all of these things, plus DVDs I’d like to own and books I’ve been meaning to read, at online swap sites, which are cropping up all over the Web.

Many are free to browse or sign up to see what goodies are offered, while others, such as HomeExchange, where I found a charming old home on the Britanny coast, charge a membership fee.

Some sites offer credits or points for their goods and services, and others leave the exchange of goods up to the barterers. Either way, they’re worth checking out because they’re a great way to unload your unwanted stuff or get something you want without spending a dime.

Some I particularly liked: BarterBee for DVDs, CDs, and games; TargetBarter, which offers everything from coffee pots and dual-fuel ranges to accounting services and dog beds; MakeupAlley for finding upscale skin and antiaging products; and FrugalReader and PaperbackSwap for stocking up on summer beach reading.

Send along your favorite sites and we’ll share them with our readers.

May I suggest www.swaptreasures.com? It just recently added support for Facebook and Twitter. This allows members to post their activities back to Facebook and Twitter - a wonderful way to socialize with your friends while trading your stuff.
