I was buying a lot more organic produce until the economy tanked and my weekly shop started costing more.
Then I discovered What's On My Food? This site not only gives you the lowdown on the number of probable or known carcinogens in favorite foods, but also other nasty chemicals such as suspected hormone disruptors and neurotoxins.
I just checked out blueberries (I love them straight out of the box, in pies, and this time of year I make blueberry “caviar,” a favorite recipe from cookbook author, Sally Schneider, which involves nothing more than a quick sauté in a smidge of butter and sugar until the berries glisten and look like big caviar eggs).
But with seven probable or known carcinogens and other chemicals, I think I’ll spring for the organic versions.
Ditto almonds—another personal favorite—which have two probable or known carcinogens and six suspected hormone disruptors. Why take a chance? I’m putting organics back on my list and I’ll cut back elsewhere.
