Green cookware that measures up

By Kristi Wiedemann on November 11, 2009 10:16:18 am

Green nonstick cookware seems to be popping up everywhere—Walmart, CrNonstick_panate & Barrel, Bed, Bath & Beyond. But what is it—and does it actually work?

Unlike typical nonstick cookware, the manufacturers of many “green” pans claim their products do not emit a potentially harmful chemical called perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). While it’s not clear how much PFOA would affect you, our past tests of conventional nonstick cookware found the pans emitted very little. Still, our experts say it makes sense to take a few precautions.
As for performance, we recently found some green cookware that scored well in our lab tests. Of three brands we tested: Earth Pan, Starfrit, and GreenPan, all were recommended picks by our experts.

To compare cookware performance, check out Cookware sets that sizzle. You can also find out why you can't always judge a pan by its claims.
