Do some homework before giving to charity

By Kenrya Rankin Naasel on December 10, 2009 12:01:00 am

Our thoughts often turn to giving during the holidays, but with thousands of charities vying for your funds, how can you tell which ones are legit? Well, you could plow through IRS records, but that’s enough to make you keep your money in your wallet.

Lucky for us all, GuideStar.org makes researching charities easy. Not only can you use the free site to verify that your charity of choice is registered with the IRS, but you can also read about its mission, check out its financials, see reviews from people who have already contributed, and even donate with just a few clicks.

You can search for a charity that fits your interests; just enter a few keywords (a search for “children” and “African American” turned up 1,000 choices) and voilà: A list of relevant nonprofits pops up.

Happy giving!
