Tips for shy hagglers

If you're shy, you'd probably rather pay full price than put yourself out there and haggle a better deal with a salesperson.

I used to be like that—quietly paying whatever the ticket price was. Then one day, with knots in my stomach and a teeny, hesitant voice. I tried it.

Granted, I started small, at a local store where they knew me and I was the only customer in the place one Saturday. I bought some earrings on sale—a pair for myself and a couple of pairs for gifts. Since I was buying in multiples, I forced myself to ask the saleswoman if she could do better on the price. Without batting an eyelash, she took off ten percent from the total. What a rush that gave me! And it was so easy.

The other day, I was sofa shopping and bought a floor sample at a considerably discounted price. I noticed a mark on the material and nicely asked if they could do any better; they did.

Sure, I've struck out a few times, but overall, I find more successes than rejection when I simply ask: “Is it possible for you to do any better on that?”

If you need a little confidence boost, check out these "10 rules for the new art of haggling." Then give it a try and let me know how it went. Good luck!
