Get tax help for less

By Jody Rohlena on March 23, 2010 12:01:00 am

Haven’t filed your taxes yet? What are you waiting for? I know, you want to be certain you’re getting every deduction coming to you, and hiring an experienced tax preparer can be expensive. But there are some good reasons to tackle your taxes sooner rather than later. As April 15 looms closer, some services hike up rates for last-minute clients. Turbo Tax, for instance, raises its prices this Friday, March 26.

And there are ways to save. My accountant knocks 25 percent off his fee if I send him a new client. Other tax preparers may offer similar incentives if you can shoot referrals their way, so ask. If you want to use a nationwide service, grab a coupon before you go (see below). And shop around—tax help may be cost less than you think. Here are some of the deals we found online:

H&R Block

Jackson Hewitt Tax Service

DealTaker.com

XPBargains.com

MonkeyBargains.com

Taxact.com

The Internal Revenue Service offers free tax help to people who make less than $49,000 a year or are over age 60. And members of the military may file for free

And finally, our experts at Consumer Reports offer their best advice for minimizing hassles and headaches at tax time.

So stop putting it off—a refund may be waiting!
