New warnings on Latisse risks

By Sue Perry on May 11, 2010 12:01:00 am

We've written about the risks of using Latisse, the eyelash lengthening product promoted by Brooke Shield's in those TV ads. But according to a recent report in the New York Times, lots of people are bypassing their eye doctors, and buying this stuff online.

The dangers of doing this are even greater because online products could be adulterated or fake. Even if buying directly from a doctor's website, you don't get any instructions for using the product correctly or learn of the brush-on lash lengthener's many risks, including purply discoloration around the eyes, a permanent change in eye color, and even the off chance that if you drop a bit on a cheek you could sprout some unsightly hair where you don't want it! See our Consumer Reports On Health blog on Latisse, and watch an important video.

Our recommendation is to skip this product altogether and use mascara instead. Lancome's was tops in our tests.

Agree with your determination that mascara is the best way to lengthen lashes. People don't know the long-term side-effects of Latisse, and all drugs typically have side-effects. Do you really want to gamble with your eyesight, potentially, to have longer, fluffier lashes?
