The National Moment of Remembrance was officially established by Congress in 1971, though it had been marked for decades before that as a day to honor those who have died while serving our country.
At 3 p.m. on Memorial Day, Americans are asked to pause for one minute for a national moment of remembrance.
Memorial Day is not just about great sales. There are so many ways to observe the day—visiting cemeteries and placing flags or flowers on the gravesites of our fallen heroes, visiting memorials, flying the flag at half-staff until noon.
So, before you head off the pools, beaches and backyard picnics, I hope you will take time to remember and reflect on those who have sacrificed for us. And I hope you will share with me (and others) what your community or you do or have done to commemorate Memorial Day.
