1023028_doughnut Did you know that the first Friday in June is National Donut Day? It’s true! And hey—that's today! You can get a free doughnut at Dunkin’ Donuts and Krispy Kreme locations nationwide. The history of the doughnut starts with the Salvation Army.

"The Salvation Army has a long heritage with the lowly donut, dating back to the 1st World War. During the war, in Europe, Salvation Army 'lassies,' as the young women were known, came upon the idea to bake donuts for the troops, as a means to offer them comfort, a 'taste' of home, as well as something to eat.  The heritage of The Salvation Army regarding donuts took off tremendously at that time, as has been legendary ever since." Click here for more on the Salvation Army and doughnuts. On June 4, Salvation Armies will be holding celebrations and fundraising events.

According to Andrew Mastrangelo of Dunkin’ Donuts, the company also plans to unveil the winner of its "Create a Donut" contest in June 4. The company received hundreds of thousands of submissions to this contest and had picked the best 12. The finalists attended Dunkin’ Donut University and learned how to make them. The winning doughnut will be offered for a limited time in shops nationally and the winner will receive $12,000.

Krispy Kreme will also offer consumers one free doughnut of any variety on June 4. Celebrate!
