Smart site: Fooducate.com

By Sue Perry on June 21, 2010 12:01:00 am

Get_thumbnail I love getting my daily nutrition updates from Fooducate.com, a coalition of parents, health professionals, and technical advisers. And you might too, if you want to become a more discerning food shopper.

The site's at-a-glance explanation of food labels can help steer you through the grocer's aisles with a more educated eye. And the daily blogging tips can help you wrestle your own food demons.

For me, it's my daily cola habit. I can think of worse things than chugging down a soda. But with New York State, where I live, on the cusp of passing a soda tax (which sort of puts it up there with cigarettes in my mind, and that's not a good thing), I've been thinking of cutting back.

Fooducate's advice: Bypass the soda aisle the next time I shop, and the time after that. By the third soda-free shop, I'll probably have moved on to mixing my own concoctions of real juice and seltzer for a healthier energy kick. I'm game!

Sue,

Thanks for mentioning Fooducate this morning.

As a father of three young kids, I couldn't find any good resources to help me buy healthy foods for my family. Thus was born Fooducate.

Good luck breaking the soda pop addiction ;-)

I broke a daily cola with lunch habit by switching to homemade "Arnold Palmers."
I make caffeine-free tea (flavored teas like Earl Grey or even chai, or plain) and mix with lower-sodium lemonade (which I found here in the refrigerated juice aisle—made with real sugar, not HFCS, but not too much of it...) and sometimes a little sparkling water. It's delicious and a lot less of what I don't need from soda.
