Where do my potato chips come from?

By Jody Rohlena on August 31, 2010 12:01:00 am

Lay’s potato chips have made a big deal of how they’re made from just three simple ingredients: potatoes, oil, and a pinch of salt. The oils are healthier varieties, they say—canola and safflower—and the potatoes are grown on 80 farms across the U.S.

Want to get even more specific? You can find out where the potatoes in your actual bag of chips were grown by checking the chip tracker.

Recent consumer research shows that supermarket shoppers are hungry for information about where their food comes from, especially in stores when they’re trying to decide what to buy.

One easy way to find local produce (a healthier choice than chips any day!) is with the Locavore app for iPhone (also accessible via Facebook). It not only tells you what produce is in season locally, it points you to farmers markets and shares recipes to cook those local ingredients.
