Feel-good gift giving on a budget

By Jody Rohlena on November 7, 2011 06:00:00 pm

Feel-good-giftsSometimes it really is the thought that counts. And we’re not talking about how you have to smile and pretend to like that ugly holiday sweater your little niece picked out all by herself. We’re talking about gifts that really make you feel good when you give—and receive—them. The gift guide in our December issue contains a collection of unforgettable presents that cost under $50 (some cost much less!) and also do something to make the world a better place.

Try bright beaded jewelry handcrafted from recycled paper by Ugandan women, from BeadForLife.org. Every piece you by helps the women start their own businesses with start-up funds and entrepreneurial training. Or sexy unisex bracelets made from old guitar and bass strings, from WearYourMusic.org. Spend just $10 for a bracelet, or spend hundreds to one made from strings strummed by Carlos Santana or another famous musician. The proceeds to go support music charities.

Or how about some delicious, decadent brownies, baked at Greyston Bakery by people other companies might call “unemployable”? The bakery’s slogan is “We don’t hire people to bake brownies, we bake brownies to hire people.” It’s around the corner from our Yonkers, N.Y., offices, but they’ll ship anywhere; see GreystonBakery.com for details.

We’ve found dozens more heart-warming websites that sell equally awesome gifts, just right for someone on your holiday gift list. If you’ve got impossible-to-buy-for folks in your life, go right to “Show them the money!” on page 26. It’s a list of worthy charities where you can make a donation in a loved one’s name.

Whatever your budget, even if it’s minuscule this year, you can find something that will make you, your loved one, and lots of other people (pets too!) feel truly good. You can find the December issue on newsstands now!

I subscribe to your magazine. I save them all, but right now I'm looking for information on crock pots or slow cookers and I don't know which magazine it was in. Can you help without me having to look through all of them?

Hi Deborah~ When we did a little test of our own, we found that 1800Flowers came through with the flowers we asked for, followed by ProFlowers and FTD. Happy holidays!
