Make a better s’more

Thinkstock93697205_SSBLOG_FOOD_s'moresIt’s tough to improve on this cookout favorite, but ShopSmart’s contributing food writer, Sarah Huck, who also co-authored “Campfire Cookery: Adventuresome Recipes & Other Curiosities for the Great Outdoors" (Stewart, Tabori & Chang, 2011) came up with some delicious new twists you might want to try out:

Make it nutty: Smear graham crackers with your favorite nut butter—peanut, almond, or cashew—before sandwiching in the melted marshmallow and chocolate. Keep the layers thin to avoid a gooey overload.

Change the chocolate: Replace the usual milk chocolate with something different, like a chocolate bar studded with hazelnuts, scented with orange, or spiced with chilies.

Swap the cookie: Graham crackers are traditional, but any crisp cookie can be used. Try oatmeal raisin, shortbread, or chocolate wafers, which you can pair with mint chocolates for a grasshopper s’more.

Happy camping!
