Shopping doesn't need to be a solo activity!

Thinkstock86502314_SSBLOG_ShoppingwfriendsWhen I lived close to my mom, our favorite Saturday activity was going shopping together. We’d hit the mall, break for lunch at one of our favorite spots (usually Bishop’s, mostly for the pie!), then head back to the racks. I miss those days. Now most of my shopping forays are solo. I get more done, but it’s not nearly as much fun—especially lunch!

So it occurred to me that I bet I could get online and find some new shopping pals if I were so inclined. I just found a book club on Meetup.com, so I was inspired to see whether there were shopping meetups too. And there are! I found groups for self-described fashionistas, flea-market fanatics, art shoppers, scrapbook-supply buyers, even a New York City food shopping club. Check Meetup.com for shopping outings and other social happenings in your area.

You can also join up with a group of shoppers for a day at a big destination mall (Mall of America, anyone? Plan your trip here.), the outlets (most outlet centers have travel info on their websites), or another shopping hotspot. To plan a trip, search online for “shopping trip” or “shopping tour” and your destination city, for example. If you want to freestyle a shopping trip, you can find out the hotspots on Trip Advisor. Who knew?

Here’s another cool option if you’re going to be in NYC: Join a shopping tour with a fashion industry insider who will take you to designer showrooms to buy stuff at insider discount prices. Get info at StyleRoom.com.

Happy shopping!
